#48 Self Development – The Missing Piece In Your Business Strategy

I was at a meeting for local business owners recently, and I got talking with some of the ladies there about the types of things they were doing to grow their businesses.

Each lady was talking about her business and what they offer and the conversation was generally flowing in the direction of marketing, systems and tech, AI… and all the things that we commonly have to wrap our heads around when we are in business.

When they asked me what I do – and because I was “reading the room” – I gave them the “not too spiritual” version of what I offer.  I gave a basic psychology version – knowing yourself, where you trip yourself up, seeing your sabotage patterns, helping you break through to the next level in leadership, expansion of business, showing up in their business etc.

They all nodded as if they understood what I was talking about and I asked them if they had done any of this type of personal development now or in the past.

What amazed me is that all of them — apart from one lady who immediately got what I was talking about — said they didn’t really think they needed it because their businesses were doing fine

The conversation then moved on and the next lady in our little group introduced herself and what she did and that was it.

I found this fascinating.

Now I know I’m not for everyone – I know that there are definitely certain women that I work best with and I’m not afraid to say that out loud – so it’s likely that these women felt no resonance for me at all… But what got me is that they didn’t think this type of self development was necessary – whether I was the one offering it or anyone else!

I was astounded actually.

It wasn’t a personal “oh, they don’t like me” type of thing.

It was an “oh my G*d, they can’t see how everything in their life could improve and amplify if they did a little bit of work on themselves!” type of thing.

It was like as if we were talking two completely different languages.

There was “business”.

And there was “self development”.

And ne’er the two shall meet, apparently…

For me, this is a really rich topic.  The women in business who I most admire do HEAPS of work on themselves.

Not because they’re a mess and they’re trying to patch themselves together, but because they know that there is more within them that can be expressed when they know themselves better.  When they can identify their triggers, their limitations, their self sabotage patterns… when to push forwards, when to hold and wait for further insights before moving forwards again.

All the things that are so close to my heart as we walk the path to remembering who we are and what we’re here for.

Even if you have no interest at all in the spiritual aspects of this – just the fact that this self development work brings out the best in you… would that not be enough to want to do it?

I know that many of the people who go to a Tony Robbins type of event wouldn’t necessarily call themselves spiritual – and they don’t need to be – but look at the growth that can occur when people do similar types of inner development work.

Again, fascinating… that these women just couldn’t see anything beyond learning systems for business and strategies for marketing.

I so wanted to talk to them about alignment, intuition, the wisdom gained through experience and that there are no mistakes in life just learning…

But clearly these women are not “my women”.

So….  I think I managed to not let my face show my shock, horror and confusion and instead,  I smiled.  Sipped my tea and moved on with my day.

And here is what I really wanted to say to those women, but didn’t…

No matter how many systems, strategies and marketing funnels you have in place and whether they are the 2019 version that you got from a “successful” marketing coach, OR the latest 2026 AI version…  what these things can never fix is you.

Because you ARE the business.

It’s your energy, your clarity, your insights and wisdom, your ability to make decisions under pressure, your relationship with money, your frequency and your sense of self worth…. THAT is running behind the scenes in your business every single moment of every single day.

When you lie in bed worrying about whether your next launch will be successful, or whether you can negotiate that contract in your favour at the meeting tomorrow morning, underneath all of that is you.

You can know everything you need to know about how to be successful in business and still self sabotage your way out of the results you’re working so hard for.

I’ve seen it so many times and honestly, I’ve done it myself in the past too.

–                I’ve lowered my prices to suit other people’s needs just to find that they don’t value my work.  Why? Because I didn’t value myself fully first.

–                I’ve shrunk away from being fully visible in my business because I was scared of what people would say about me or think about my ideas.

–                I’ve put out offers that my marketing coach suggested would be good, just to find that they went nowhere because they were not from me.  They were not perfectly aligned to the women I most love to work with, and most importantly they were not aligned to me – because I didn’t know myself enough at that stage to recognise that none of it was in alignment for me.

But these aren’t really business or marketing problems.

These are self-awareness problems and no marketing strategy or new system is really going to override this.  Certainly not long term anyway…

This is exactly why the women in business that I admire the most also invest heavily in their own self development – so that they can know themselves first, and lead everything else from that place.

When you know your own patterns and when you know what feels in alignment for you, you start making decisions from a completely different place. You stop second-guessing yourself and start moving forwards with a confidence that naturally comes from within you.

That’s what this work does.

It’s not like a meditation class, coffee morning or a book club you go to in your spare time.

It’s the difference between building your business on shifting sand or building it from a place within you that is solid and strong.  You, when you fully own yourself and stand in your truth.

So if you’re a woman in business and what I’ve said here makes sense to you, pay attention to that.

That’s your intuition – yes, whether you consider yourself spiritual or not, in business your intuition (properly developed) is priceless! Everyone has it and it knows exactly what your next step should be.

The question is will you listen to it and follow your own inner guidance?  If that’s a yes, that recognition is real and I’d love to show you what is possible when you do.
