There’s a moment I’ve seen so many times over the years, when overriding yourself becomes impossible to ignore.
I’ll share something, perhaps a pattern or behaviour that I’ve noticed, and someone will say something like:
“Yeh, I knew that already…”
And when I hear that, I know something important has just happened.
Because what they are really recognising in that moment is not new information.
It’s something they had already felt or sensed. Something they had already known at some level.
But they hadn’t trusted it.
Or they’d overridden it.
Sometimes that happens because the knowing didn’t make logical sense at the time. Or it happens because someone else’s opinion felt stronger or more convincing.
And sometimes it happens because trusting that inner voice would have required a level of change they didn’t quite feel ready for.
So they set it aside. Sometimes for years.
They listened to someone else because they thought they knew better.
Or they followed a different path because it seemed to make more sense.
Or they tried to make something work that never quite felt right – and goodness knows I’ve done that myself. Several times over!
But then at some point, often much later on, they find themselves right back at the same point all over again.
They have a knowing, and they’re seeing it more clearly this time.
And realising that it had been there all along.
They thought they needed to find something… but actually they just needed to trust themselves.
I find that moment fascinating.
Because it’s not really about getting new answers.
It’s about recognising where we have been overriding what we already knew… and beginning to see what that has cost us over time.
Not in a big dramatic way.
But in ways that shape our lives.
The decisions we delayed.
The paths we didn’t take.
The courage we couldn’t find.
The parts of ourselves we set aside for different reasons…
And when people begin to see that clearly, something starts to shift.
Not because someone tells them what to do next.
But because they can no longer ignore the voice inside of them that has been asking them to stop hiding.
