#24 The Moment Before You Override Yourself

Thoughtful woman reflecting on overriding yourself and the small moments that shape change
There’s a moment that we don’t often talk about.

Originally it would have been unconscious… but we’re beyond that now.

We know what we’re doing. And it’s kind of embarrassing to admit it sometimes… because once you see it, you have to live with it. And that can hurt.

It’s not the moment where you realise something afterwards, when you’re reflecting and thinking about what you should have done.

And it’s not the moments where everything feels clear and aligned either.

It’s the moment in between.

The moment where you’re just about to do what you’ve always done… and something in you notices.

It’s subtle.

You might not catch it every time, but when you do, you can feel it. There’s a pause. A split second where you can see what you’re about to do… and you know that there’s a chance you’re going to cave in and go backwards.

You know what you’re about to say.
You know what you’re about to agree to.
You know you’re about to override yourself.

And in that moment, you have a choice.

Not a big, dramatic one. A small one.

You can carry on as you always have… or you can do something slightly different.

I think this is where people get a bit stuck sometimes.  They misunderstand change. They think it comes from the big decisions, the big shifts, the moments where everything is obvious… and they set new goals, affirmations, visualise success and get really excited about what could be.

But more often than not, it comes from here… from these smaller moments that don’t look like much on the surface, but actually shape everything.

The ones that no one else sees. The ones that pass quickly if you’re not paying attention…

But they’re also the ones that make you burn inside… the ones you go over and over in your mind later on… because you know what you should have done… but you still chose otherwise.

Those are the moments that either reinforce the old… or begin to shift you into something new.

Because when you begin to catch yourself in those moments… and stay with it… even just a little more than you did before… something begins to shift.

Not all at once, but enough.

And over time, that’s what changes things.

This is something we work with quite deeply inside Sanctuary…. In fact we did a whole class on this today!
It’s all about learning to recognise those moments while they’re happening, so that you can stay with yourself instead of overriding it.

These are the moments that shape who you become.
