My Em Dash Rant

I’ve been writing a lot in recent weeks.

Partly because I’ve been feeling very inspired and in flow, and partly because I am restructuring my business to be more clearly aligned with what I offer and who I best serve.

And I’ve noticed a rather irritating potential influence that AI is having upon my work.  (A potential influence that I am actively overriding, I might add).

Anyway, It’s causing me to want to censor myself!

So feeling this, I decided to pull up some of my old articles to analyse my writing style…

Some years back I worked with an editor on several key pieces and I can see the influence she has had upon my work in a positive way.

She invited me to use shorter paragraphs and punchier statement sentences.

She pointed out to me that I tend to ramble a bit sometimes (who me?!)… my grammar is off at times… and I am prone to going off on a tangent to come back to a full circle.

She’s right! I know that. But that’s very “me” – my style of writing, you could say…

She also told me that it’s probably not great that I use a few too many swear words in my writing, but hey…. Who’s counting?

So anyway, as I was reading through these old articles I noticed something and THAT’S when I found why the potential influence of AI has begun to irritate me.

When I write naturally it just flows through me. Often starting at around 3am it seems…

And it appears that I have always used hyphens – to elaborate a bit on certain points – and I have always used the pattern:

not this,
not that,
but the other….
(You know the one that AI loves to use, don’t you?)

Well I found that these hyphens and patterns are all over my work from YEARS BEFORE Chat GPT and others came publicly on to the scene. (It is a LLM afterall…)

But I was an OG when it comes to this – even in my articles from 2006!

And what I’ve found myself ALMOST doing recently, is censoring myself.

Yes! Due to AI’s influence I am feeling the subtle need to change how I write….

Why?

So that people won’t think I’m using AI.

How f’ing ridiculous is that?!

Truthfully I don’t actually know how to write a proper “EM dash” – I use hyphens.

But my curiosity made me research the EM dash versus a hyphen and I’m blown away to discover that there is also an EN dash! Who knew?!

Anyway, what p*sses me off is that the copy/paste function that I use all the time between platforms actually CHANGES my hyphens to a frikkin em dash!

And that has stressed me – because now I’m worried that people will think I’m using AI to write my posts – although I’m not sure that AI actually swears as much as me, does it?!

And this whole thing has now become hilarious because I’m tip-toeing around AI.

And seriously overthinking this!!!!!

So now I’m letting it go.

BOOM! Done

So that’s my little rant for today…. (I need a cup of tea ).

But the bottom line is….

That I WILL use hyphens that somehow get changed to EM dashes…

And I WILL say “not this, not that, but the other”…

I also WILL write my own content.

And whilst I am appreciating the help of AI for my website and You Tube SEO I WILL NOT allow it to write for me – because it doesn’t know me and it
doesn’t have my lived experience… and because it isn’t me and it doesn’t know me (even though it thinks it does and claims it can reflect my higher self…..    oh puhlease….make it stop!!!!.

Most importantly it will never have my energetic signature.

What are your thoughts on this?

Have you noticed AI influencing you in subtle or not so subtle ways? Tell me of your experience with this…
