#23 The Small Moments Where Your Life Changes

Thoughtful woman reflecting on holding yourself back in quiet everyday moments

I think we often assume that change comes from the big moments.

The big decisions… the big shifts… those “take massive action” moments (which make me cringe to be honest).

The moments where suddenly everything feels clear and certain… and you finally decide to do something about it.  Yay!!!!!!

And yes, those moments matter, but in my experience, that’s not really what changes your life.

Your life changes through a series of small but consistent moments… the ones that don’t always seem very big or significant at the time but lead to something pretty phenomenal when you look back on them later.

There are pivotal moments in your life when you have the opportunity to put that change into action and in those moments you are asked to step forward… and you either do, or you don’t.

Let me give you an few examples:

You know those conversations where you almost say something because everything inside of you is screaming to speak up… but then you don’t and you hold yourself back instead.
Or that moment when you know exactly what you need to do… but then you hesitate and doubt yourself and do nothing – and then cringe because you did nothing.
Or when you’re asking to go along with something that doesn’t feel quite right to you… but you go along with it anyway because it seems easier and you just want to keep the peace.

Those moments are easy to brush past because they don’t feel big enough to matter – but they do.  These are the pivot points in your life and most of the time, you actually know it…  you can feel that there is something “different” about these moment, but you just hold back.

These moments add up though, and they begin to shape the direction your life actually takes.

I’ve seen this so many times… and I’ve done it myself too.  And once I became aware of what I was doing – and I noticed that I STILL continued to do it – I really used to cringe afterwards… because it always felt like I’d betrayed myself in that moment.

These moments are the ones that matter most because they are the ones in which we get to hold our truth and integrity… in which we hold our standard OR we cave in as if what we stand for doesn’t matter.  As if WE don’t matter.  These moments are the ones that build us or break us and its something we look at quite deeply in the work we do inside Sanctuary.

With awareness we begin to catch ourselves – and then we begin to choose a behaviour that is slightly different to what we used to do… and then we stay with what we know and we begin to embody it instead of overriding it.

And that’s when things begin to change.

Not all at once… but steadily… in a way that we can finally hold it.  Subtle changes on the inside that over time create massive changes on the outside.  Not all at once to overwhelm us but consistently growing at a manageable pace.
